To make sure your hydraulic hose lasts as long as the manufacturer meant it to, here is what you can do:
- Protect your hydraulic hose against pressure surges above the maximum operating pressure, as these shorten hose life. Hose working pressure must always equal or exceed the maximum system pressure, including pressure spikes.
- Protect your hydraulic hose against pressure surges above the maximum operating pressure, as these shorten hose life. Hose working pressure must always equal or exceed the maximum system pressure, including pressure spikes.
- Also ensure the hose, fittings and assembly equipment are compatible and fabricated as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The coupling-to-hose mechanical interface must be compatible with the hose. The mating thread end must also be correct so that the mating components can connect properly for perfect sealing.
- Use the proper size and correct type of hose in your hydraulic system. Select the right size by measuring the inside and outside diameters (OD) of the hose, and its length. The new hose should be as long as the one being replaced. If it’s too long, moving components may damage it. Hoses that are too short may contract and stretch under pressure, which shortens longevity.
- Also be sure to operate the hydraulic system within the temperature range for which your hose is suited. Hoses can lose their flexibility under continuous exposure to high temperature, and failure to use the correct hydraulic oil intensifies this problem.
- A hose’s lifespan is also reduced when exposed to high external and internal temperatures simultaneously. One can protect hoses from hot equipment parts and other high temperature sources with insulating sleeves.
- Check whether the tube compound is compatible with the fluid used in your system. High temperatures and fluid contamination and concentration affect the chemical compatibility of the tube and fluid. Most hydraulic hoses are compatible with petroleum-based oils, but it’s prudent to check if your hose is also compatible with biodegradable fluids.
- When you eventually need to replace your hose, do so without delay to ensure your hydraulic system remains in good working order.
